INFORMATION REGARDING FIELD TRIPS - 2010/2011

(
click here to jump down to the list of upcoming filed trips)

1. I have attempted to secure as many dates as possible, but there are always changes through the year so ALWAYS check the email for updated information on dates/days/times of all field trips.

2. I will send out an email announcing the field trip, giving details, and asking for RSVP to one of their email addresses at least a week or two in advance.  I will always list a date for RSVP and I will indicate whether or not the field trip is open to ONLY Charity LEAH, or to family and friends as well.
PLEASE always double check that you RSVP to the correct email address. I will email you back with a response, so if you don't get one from me within a day, I probably didn't get your email!!

3. Because of the large number of people to manage for field trips, it is usually most convenient to use email for sign ups.  You may certainly call to sign up but all announcements will go out via email.  With them being posted on Facebook as well, it is ok for you to accept that you are coming, but you MUST email me to sign up, a FB accept is NOT a sign up!!

4. Suggesting and/or Scheduling Trips:  I appreciate any and all suggestions, but I may not be able to make them all happen.  I will do my best to fit in your suggestions if not this year, maybe next year. If you would like to coordinate a field trip, I am totally open to that.  Please don't feel that you cannot organize a trip just because Charity has a "field trip coordinator."  I just ask that you contact me with the trip that you are planning and the date, so I can make sure it isn't something I already have planned or the same date as another trip, play, or class, so that there aren't conflicts.

Thanks,
Michele Boyer

I do have more that I'm waiting to hear about dates that I will add when confirmed.  All the trips highlighted are confirmed dates as of now.  Many places won't confirm this early out.

I will be sending out email sign ups for each one of these trips when it gets closer, some of the bigger trips and plays sooner since they need count and/or payment earlier than the trip date.  So make sure to look for the emails if you are interested in signing up for any of them.

Also be aware of the dates on the sign up email, they are the final date, not this posting, in case they change anything on me.

*Denotes trips that will be out of state and overnight

I be adding a few more trips into some months, I am waiting to hear back from quite a few places before I verify them.  I have a long list other than what I have put on here.  There will be at least 2 or 3 a month plus other activities such as Skating, Ice Hockey, bowling, etc.

*As you can see, I am planning a couple bigger trips that lead us into PA.  I will be sending the info. for these out a few months in advance so that everyone has time to plan.  We are going to be getting significant rate discounts and they are great for small family getaways.

Limited Time Exhibit:
Extreme Mammals: The Biggest, Smallest, and Most Amazing Mammals of All Time
December 23, 2011—April 15, 2012

Stand in the shadow of the largest land mammal that ever lived—the 16-foot-tall Indricotherium. Peek at a Bumblebee Bat so tiny, it weighs only about as much as a dime. A thrilling adventure, Extreme Mammals: The Biggest, Smallest, and Most Amazing Mammals of All Time brings Rochester Museum & Science Center visitors face-to-face with a wondrous array of extraordinary creatures. Experience this remarkable exhibition from December 23, 2011 through April 15, 2012 in the Riedman Gallery and its surrounding areas.

Featuring spectacular specimens from New York City's American Museum of Natural History, the exhibition examines the ancestry and evolution of numerous species through fossils, skeletons, vivid mammal reconstructions as well as objects from Rochester Museum & Science Center collections. Species range from huge to tiny, from speedy to sloth-like, and display characteristics such as oversized claws, fangs, snouts and horns. Wait…is that really a nose? Look over there—a "walking whale!" Become utterly mesmerized.

Divided into ten main sections—Introduction, What is a Mammal?, What is Extreme?, Heads-to-Tails: Heads, Reproduction, Heads-to-Tails Bodies, Mammals in Motion, Extreme Environment, Extreme Isolation, Extreme Extinction, followed by an Epilogue—the exhibition explores how mammals survived the extinction of the dinosaurs and diversified, evolving into the wondrous, and sometimes strange, creatures that are with us today. Through the use of dynamic media displays, animated computer interactive areas, hands-on activities, touchable fossils, casts and taxidermy specimens, the exhibition highlights distinctive mammalian qualities and illuminates the shared ancestry that unites these diverse creatures.

Did you know that you are a mammal? You are extreme, too! Discover how this is so, and transform yourself into a creature even more bizarre than you could ever imagine. Crawl into a model of a glyptodont's shell to experience what it feels like to be sheltered by this protective body armor, try on massive mammoth teeth, and see if you can match fur to its animal owner.

Experts continue to make marvelous mammal discoveries today…even about what might be the most extreme mammals of all—humans. Perhaps one day YOU will reveal the mammal discovery of a lifetime.

Extreme Mammals is organized by the American Museum of Natural History, New York, in collaboration with the California Academy of Sciences, San Francisco; Canadian Museum of Nature, Ottawa, Canada; and Cleveland Museum of Natural History.

Planetarium show:

For Grades 3–up
Solar System 2012 uses outer space as a "hook" for concepts and skills you need to cover: proportion, comparison and contrast, mathematical representation, gathering and organizing data, classification, observation, prediction, decision making. Get an overview of the basics and the most important new discoveries so you can follow news about the Sun, planets, dwarf planets, moons, comets, and asteroids.

New Exhibit:

Grades 2–12

What is energy? Where does it come from and how do we use it? What does the future hold for our energy needs, and what can we do to make a difference? Students explore these questions and more in this fully interactive exhibition developed and built by RMSC staff and volunteers. Energy sources, forms and transformations are presented in a way that engages the whole body so that students can truly feel the energy required to power their world, and understand the choices they can make to impact the future.

AN EVER-CHANGING
GRADES PRE-K –12
Expedition Earth—Get in touch with the distant past as you gaze at a full-scale Albertosaurus skeleton in a setting that evokes the environment this fierce predator inhabited 65 to 200 million years ago. Touch real dinosaur bones! See and touch fossil dinosaur tracks, and discover what they can tell you about the animals that made them.
Enter a glacial ice cave, shimmering with bright, translucent reflections. Feel the temperature drop, and hear the ice crack. Young children will enjoy exploring their own, smaller-scale version of the cave.
Explore the beauty and structure of ice as you manipulate the formation of ice crystals in a hands-on exhibit. Touch and examine objects left by glaciers.
Take a virtual hike to Mendon Ponds Park to see local evidence of glacial features. Press a button and watch the Rochester skyline fade beneath the vast glacier that once covered the city's location.
Uncover replica bones at a mastodon dig site, and identify them by comparison with the nearby, full-size mounted mastodon skeleton. A vertical wall dig site makes this activity wheelchair accessible.
Compare and contrast bones from two mastodons excavated in our area. Using a computer screen, take images of scattered mastodon bones and reconstruct a compete skeleton.
Stand in awe at the feet of a full-size replica mastodon in a diorama evoking its natural habitat. Touch and compare lifelike reproductions of teeth from mastodons and mammoths. Examine evidence of plants and animals found at dig sites, and see how this helps scientists reconstruct the mastodon and its environment.
Leave the glaciers behind as the saga of humans in our region begins. You'll hear perspectives on nature from an early hunter arriving soon after the glacier left this area, a Seneca woman, a resident of Rochesterville during the early years of the Erie Canal, and a contemporary Rochesterian.
Hands-on exhibits help you learn about the succession of animals and plants that inhabited the region in the wake of the retreating glacier.
Expedition Earth Glaciers & Giants is inspiring, educational, and fabulous fun for families, individuals of all ages, and school groups. Teachers will find great connections to earth science, life science, and local history.

You & Your Earth- explores the environment we live in today. Investigate the vast array of living things that populate our region, and discover the connections that we humans have to all of the life forms around us.

Examine hundreds of objects from the RMSC's natural science collections. Take a visual tour of our region's landscape, surveying changes that have taken place since humans began arriving in large numbers a few hundred years ago.

Rediscover spectacular dioramas of our local environment featuring black bears, beavers, and the Bergen Bog. These re-created scenes are enhanced with interactive audio and visual features. Young visitors will particularly enjoy the Willow Theater, complete with puppets and costumes, located in the child-size Beaver Lodge.

Continue the journey as you discover how scientists collect and analyze information about the environment, and how science can help us make everyday decisions that have important effects on environmental quality. Complete your expedition with a visit to the "Bio-Bulletins Theater" for updates from the American Museum of Natural History about current issues in biological science and the global environment.

Arnold Lobel's well-loved characters hop from the page to the stage in this joyous musical.
A Year with Frog and Toad remains true to the spirit of the original stories as it follows two great friends, the cheerful and popular Frog and the rather grumpy Toad through four fun-filled seasons. Waking from hibernation in the spring, they proceed to plant gardens, swim, rake leaves and go sledding, learning life lessons along the way, including a most important one about friendship and rejoicing in the attributes that make each of us different and special.
